Aspirin can prevent Cancer?

Aspirin can prevent Cancer?

New research has shown that aspirin has the ability to prevent cancer, especially Colorectal Cancer and Stomach Cancer.

Here is a list of cancers that aspirin may prevent:

  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Stomach Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Brain Cancer
  • Throat Cancer
  • Breast Cancer

The study shows a small amount of aspirin taken daily may significantly reduce the risk of death caused by a variety of cancer.

Dr. Peter Rothwell of John Radcliffe Hospital of Oxford University and his colleagues reviewed eight clinical trials in the United Kingdom; over twenty-five thousand five hundred people participated in the trial. Testing times ranged from 4 to 8 years. It was found that subjects taking as much as 75 mg of aspirin daily for over 20 years, cancer mortality rate can be reduced by 20%, of which colorectal cancer mortality rate can be reduced to 40%, lung cancer to 30%, esophageal cancer significantly reduced to 60%.  Other causes of mortality had also decreased by 10%, the effects of cancer prevention can last up to 20 years.

It is most effective when taking aspirin for 5 year. Mortality rate can be reduced  to 30-40%, depending on the type of cancer.

However, Lesley Walker,  member of the British Association for Cancer Research (Cancer research UK) has warned that the study is still not mature; taking aspirin to prevent cancer should not yet be recommended at this point.

Side effects and precautions of Aspirin:

Gastrointestinal effects: abdominal discomfort and nausea, and stomach bleeding. Therefore, aspirin should be taking with food and antacids (when needed) to reduce irritation. Patients with stomach ulcers should take aspirin with extra caution. Alcohol should be avoided when taking aspirin.

Acid reaction: nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, headache, dizziness when overdose.  Ggastric lavage, catharsis, or oral sodium bicarbonate may be needed.

Allergic reactions: Angioneurotic edema, asthma or anaphylactic shock may occur. Therefore,  patients with asthma should not take aspirin.

8 simple habits to prevent cancer

According to World Health Organization (WTO),  cancer has becoming the leading cause of death globally and has accounted for 7,600,000 deaths each year, which is around 13% of all deaths.  WTO also states that 1/3 of cancer is preventable by making changes to your daily habits.  Here are 8 simple habits that may prevent you from having cancer.

The simple answer is eating more greens.  You should eat at least 400 to 800 grams of vegetables and fruits everyday, which may reduce the risk of having cancer by 20%.  Lack of vegetables and fruits will increase the risk of Oral cancer, Nasopharyngeal cancer, Esophageal cancer, Lung Cancer, Stomach Cancer, Colon Cancer and Rectal cancer.
