Aspirin can prevent Cancer?

Aspirin can prevent Cancer?

New research has shown that aspirin has the ability to prevent cancer, especially Colorectal Cancer and Stomach Cancer.

Here is a list of cancers that aspirin may prevent:

  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Stomach Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Brain Cancer
  • Throat Cancer
  • Breast Cancer

The study shows a small amount of aspirin taken daily may significantly reduce the risk of death caused by a variety of cancer.

Dr. Peter Rothwell of John Radcliffe Hospital of Oxford University and his colleagues reviewed eight clinical trials in the United Kingdom; over twenty-five thousand five hundred people participated in the trial. Testing times ranged from 4 to 8 years. It was found that subjects taking as much as 75 mg of aspirin daily for over 20 years, cancer mortality rate can be reduced by 20%, of which colorectal cancer mortality rate can be reduced to 40%, lung cancer to 30%, esophageal cancer significantly reduced to 60%.  Other causes of mortality had also decreased by 10%, the effects of cancer prevention can last up to 20 years.

It is most effective when taking aspirin for 5 year. Mortality rate can be reduced  to 30-40%, depending on the type of cancer.

However, Lesley Walker,  member of the British Association for Cancer Research (Cancer research UK) has warned that the study is still not mature; taking aspirin to prevent cancer should not yet be recommended at this point.

Side effects and precautions of Aspirin:

Gastrointestinal effects: abdominal discomfort and nausea, and stomach bleeding. Therefore, aspirin should be taking with food and antacids (when needed) to reduce irritation. Patients with stomach ulcers should take aspirin with extra caution. Alcohol should be avoided when taking aspirin.

Acid reaction: nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, headache, dizziness when overdose.  Ggastric lavage, catharsis, or oral sodium bicarbonate may be needed.

Allergic reactions: Angioneurotic edema, asthma or anaphylactic shock may occur. Therefore,  patients with asthma should not take aspirin.

8 Habits to Prevent Cancer

8 simple habits to prevent cancer

According to World Health Organization (WTO),  cancer has becoming the leading cause of death globally and has accounted for 7,600,000 deaths each year, which is around 13% of all deaths.  WTO also states that 1/3 of cancer is preventable by making changes to your daily habits.  Here are 8 simple habits that may prevent you from having cancer.

  1. Weight control: Avoid underweight or overweight. As overweight or obese will increase the risk of Endometrial cancer, Breast cancer, Kidney cancer and Colon cancer.

The simple answer is eating more greens.  You should eat at least 400 to 800 grams of vegetables and fruits everyday, which may reduce the risk of having cancer by 20%.  Lack of vegetables and fruits will increase the risk of Oral cancer, Nasopharyngeal cancer, Esophageal cancer, Lung Cancer, Stomach Cancer, Colon Cancer and Rectal cancer.
  3. More starchy foods: Starchy foods are rich source of vitamins B, which may reduce the risk of cancer. Your daily diet should include sweet potatoes, potatoes, yam, rice, pasta or any wheat products. However, do not eat overcooked starchy foods, such as french fries and potato chips.

What is Mesothelioma?

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma cancer (asbestos cancer) is mainly caused by close contact with asbestos, cancer occurs in the pleural and peritoneal membrane.  Long term inhalation of excessive asbestos dust in the construction, manufacturing, and shipping industry are more likely to suffer from this occupational disease.  Most patients were diagnosed with mesothelioma during the last  stage of  cancer; those tiny asbestos fibers or asbestos dust can lurk in the lung membrane for 25 to 50 years.  Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for about 20% of all mesothelioma cases.  Though mesothelioma can occur in any ages, mean age was 54 years old, of which about 63% of cases  were diagnosed between the age of  45-64 years of age.

Mesothelioma Cancer Symptoms Checklist:

  1. persistent coughing
  2. difficulty with swallowing or breathing
  3. chest pain
  4. loss of appetite
  5. weight loss
  6. nausea
  7. muscle pain
  8. abdominal lumps or pain (peritoneal mesothelioma)
  9. gastrointestinal fluid flow and diarrhea (peritoneal mesothelioma)

  • Surgical treatment
  • Radiotherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Combination therapy (such as cisplatin + cyclophosphamide + vincristine amine), with intraperitoneal injection of chemotherapy drugs (eg cisplatin)

During the early stage of mesothelioma, it  can be  treated with surgical excision, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  When symptoms begin to appear, that's usually the last stage of mesothelioma, At the last stage of mesothelioma, treatment success rate are not high.
Many patients died 2 years after s/he have been diagnosed;  some even died six months of diagnosis.  Chemotherapy drugs cisplatin or gemcitabine treatment can help prolong the patient's survival period.

An inspiring story of alternative healing from an American cancer specialist

There was a famous American doctor of cancer. His mother had lung cancer. Her lung cancer already expanded to bones and brain, so chemotherapy didn't work. This doctor was very clear that his mom's life is not going to last long. But he still asked a European alternative healing cancer center for a consultation. Every treatments this cancer center do didn't get approved by mainstream medicine. As a cancer specialist himself, he would never recommend any patient to try something like this. But as a son, he would try everything to heal his mom. So they flew to Europe for this alternative treatment.

The people who worked in this center all look energetic, and very optimistic. These suffering mother and son started to get a little optimistic as well stimulated by these people. However they're still very suspicious when the treatment starts. Few days later, they feel a lot happier and much more optimistic. This center doesn't give medicines or chemotherapy, because whoever comes in already did the maximum chemical or medicine treatment one could take. Patients here take a treatment through a special designed diet with powder and herbs. It was heard that these nutrients are what the patient lacks. The whole treatment includes group treatment with other cancer patients and meditation as well. With positive energy and hope, his mother feels confident and happy. This feeling is so different from waiting for death in the hospital.

Few weeks later in the middle of the treatment, this mother passed away in sleep. From the mainstream medical point of view, all the flying cost, efforts and time, the fake hope that built up during the treatment seemed to make this trip totally worthless. However, this doctor, as a son as well, didn't regret what he did. He said, "Science can't give me, my mother and my family the calmness, the peace and the satisfaction during this period of time. "

This story told me that whether we choose alternative healing or not, the attitude towards it must be very clear - it's a treatment that we believe in, whether it succeeds or not. Then we should be able to find our peace.

A little chicken soup story against Cancer

So today's post isn't about any healing, or may it's an inspiring story from Taiwan. It's a little  chicken soup story.

In Taiwan there's a couple who sell chickens on the market. Mr. He has a healthy face and doesn't look like he's almost 60 already. Behind the big smile of this couple, there's an unknown tough history. Mr. Ho got lung cancer 10 years ago. When Mrs. He recalled that treatment period, she still feels hurting. Mrs. He said, "I was so worried about him after he had the surgery. Since he started the chemotherapy, he got no stamina. He could only lie on a bed or on a couch. I could only cry all day.  I just couldn't help worrying about him and couldn't even sleep at night. "

She said in order to keep the stamina of Mr. Ho for his chemotherapy, she stayed in the kitchen watching the stove for 8 hours every day just to stew a bowl of condensed chicken soup. "At first somebody told me that I can't feed a cancer patient too nourished food," Mrs. He said. "So he started to complain as he's feeling weaker everyday - and even said before he died of cancer, he'd have died of starvation. I was feeling so bad and I thought since it's already a late stage of his lung cancer, I'll just cook whatever you like and nutritious. So after chemotherapy I just kept feeding him the "condensed" chicken soup and amazingly his body has been recovering well day by day. Even now our doctor is still very surprised Mr. He still survives healthily!" So she still keep stewing this condensed soup for her husband everyday for over 10 years.

Although Mrs. He's been taking care of him, when Mr. He found out his lung cancer was already third stage, he almost wanted to give up because chemotherapy was really tough - and no guarantee that it would work. So he wanted to give up himself to "free up" his wife. However, his wife, Mrs. He, still stayed beside him and encouraged him. She walked in the park with him and talked everyday with lots of love and care. Finally he got enlightened and told himself he had to survive. "At first I really decided to let go of my life and I was in bad mood every day. I got terrible temper towards my wife. There was a time she couldn't stand it and we had a big quarrel. However, after that fight, I realized that if I can still live, it's already a blessing. Now he keep telling other cancer patients to be optimistic, feed themselves  well after Chemotherapy, even if they can't swallow - just don't give up.

It's hard to imagine a woman can stew the same soup everyday for 10 years just to support her loved ones. They've supported each other to fight cancer for over 10 years. It's definitely easy to say than do. They concluded with their own experience: during chemotherapy the patients really have to save their energy to fight cancer. Of course, support and love from the family definitely help.
