Colorectal Cancer Prevention

Colorectal Cancer Prevention

Colorectal cancer patients  seem be getting younger and younger. Patients between the age of 40 to 50 has tripled in the past 20 years.  60% of colorectal cancer occurred in the last two feet of the large intestine - the sigmoid colon to the rectum.  In fact, colorectal cancer is usually caused by intestinal polyps. The key to prevention is early detection and removal of intestinal polyps, so to prevent it from developing into malignant colorectal polyps.

Both men and women should have regular check-ups once reached the age of 50.  Here are some options:

Option 1- Fecal Occult Blood Test

The most basic method  is to receive annual FOBT (Fecal occult blood test), which is a test to see if stool contains  invisible blood.  If the test is positive, further procedure, such as colonoscapy, needs to be done.

Option 2- Sigmoidoscopy

Conduct sigmoidoscopy once every five years.  Endoscopic length is short, only up to the sigmoid colon.

Option 3- Fecal Occult Blood Test + Sigmoidoscopy

FOBT annually AND sigmoidoscopy once every five years.

Option 4- Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy once every five years, which can reach the entire colon.

Generally speaking, people with family history of colorectal cancer or intestinal polyps previously found are at high risk group.  This group should begin regular check-ups at a younger age, and procedures should be done more frequently. If polyps are found during the colonoscopy procedure, doctors can remove them immediately.

Aspirin can prevent Cancer?

Aspirin can prevent Cancer?

New research has shown that aspirin has the ability to prevent cancer, especially Colorectal Cancer and Stomach Cancer.

Here is a list of cancers that aspirin may prevent:

  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Stomach Cancer
  • Prostate Cancer
  • Lung Cancer
  • Brain Cancer
  • Throat Cancer
  • Breast Cancer

The study shows a small amount of aspirin taken daily may significantly reduce the risk of death caused by a variety of cancer.

Dr. Peter Rothwell of John Radcliffe Hospital of Oxford University and his colleagues reviewed eight clinical trials in the United Kingdom; over twenty-five thousand five hundred people participated in the trial. Testing times ranged from 4 to 8 years. It was found that subjects taking as much as 75 mg of aspirin daily for over 20 years, cancer mortality rate can be reduced by 20%, of which colorectal cancer mortality rate can be reduced to 40%, lung cancer to 30%, esophageal cancer significantly reduced to 60%.  Other causes of mortality had also decreased by 10%, the effects of cancer prevention can last up to 20 years.

It is most effective when taking aspirin for 5 year. Mortality rate can be reduced  to 30-40%, depending on the type of cancer.

However, Lesley Walker,  member of the British Association for Cancer Research (Cancer research UK) has warned that the study is still not mature; taking aspirin to prevent cancer should not yet be recommended at this point.

Side effects and precautions of Aspirin:

Gastrointestinal effects: abdominal discomfort and nausea, and stomach bleeding. Therefore, aspirin should be taking with food and antacids (when needed) to reduce irritation. Patients with stomach ulcers should take aspirin with extra caution. Alcohol should be avoided when taking aspirin.

Acid reaction: nausea, vomiting, tinnitus, headache, dizziness when overdose.  Ggastric lavage, catharsis, or oral sodium bicarbonate may be needed.

Allergic reactions: Angioneurotic edema, asthma or anaphylactic shock may occur. Therefore,  patients with asthma should not take aspirin.
