What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma cancer (asbestos cancer) is mainly caused by close contact with asbestos, cancer occurs in the pleural and peritoneal membrane.  Long term inhalation of excessive asbestos dust in the construction, manufacturing, and shipping industry are more likely to suffer from this occupational disease.  Most patients were diagnosed with mesothelioma during the last  stage of  cancer; those tiny asbestos fibers or asbestos dust can lurk in the lung membrane for 25 to 50 years.  Peritoneal mesothelioma accounts for about 20% of all mesothelioma cases.  Though mesothelioma can occur in any ages, mean age was 54 years old, of which about 63% of cases  were diagnosed between the age of  45-64 years of age.

Mesothelioma Cancer Symptoms Checklist:

  1. persistent coughing
  2. difficulty with swallowing or breathing
  3. chest pain
  4. loss of appetite
  5. weight loss
  6. nausea
  7. muscle pain
  8. abdominal lumps or pain (peritoneal mesothelioma)
  9. gastrointestinal fluid flow and diarrhea (peritoneal mesothelioma)


  • Surgical treatment
  • Radiotherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Combination therapy (such as cisplatin + cyclophosphamide + vincristine amine), with intraperitoneal injection of chemotherapy drugs (eg cisplatin)

During the early stage of mesothelioma, it  can be  treated with surgical excision, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.  When symptoms begin to appear, that's usually the last stage of mesothelioma, At the last stage of mesothelioma, treatment success rate are not high.
Many patients died 2 years after s/he have been diagnosed;  some even died six months of diagnosis.  Chemotherapy drugs cisplatin or gemcitabine treatment can help prolong the patient's survival period.
